Families Help Families at CCSC

On the Saturday of Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, over 200 volunteers came together to help those in need during Christian Community Service Center’s 2024 Family Service Day.

Serving together, six shifts of family groups made 1,200 hygiene kits for the struggling families who will visit CCSC’s Emergency Services programs in the coming weeks. The kits included shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes and a first aid kit—items that add up for those living on limited incomes.

In addition to the service project, volunteers took a quick tour of CCSC’s clothing and food pantries and learned more about how CCSC is combating hunger in Houston.

“It was great! It was great because I like the helping part,” said 5-year-old William Powell.

His grandmother, Donna Hemmi, agreed. “I really love that you do this for little kids,” Donna added.

“We’d absolutely do this again,” said Donna Moye. “CCSC is a place where local people can get help. Doing this is a tangible benefit to the local community.”

Seventh grader Daniel Ramirez would also attend CCSC’s Family Service Day again.

“Yes, I’d do it again because it’s fun and I got to help other people,” Daniel said.

“It’s important to CCSC to offer an opportunity for families to serve together,” said Chief Advancement Officer Lauren Niemeyer. “We thank all the families who volunteered and made our 2024 Family Service Day both fun and meaningful. And special thanks go to longtime CCSC supporter Emily Griffin, who
sponsored the hygiene kit project.”
