Last Saturday, 170 parents and children came together to help Houstonians in need during CCSC's third Family Service Day.
Serving together, six shifts of family groups put together 1,200 hygiene kits for the struggling families who will visit CCSC's Emergency Services food pantries in the coming weeks. The kits included shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and a first aid kit—items that add up for those living on limited incomes.
In addition to the service project, volunteers took a quick tour of our clothing and food pantries and our JobNet program to learn more about how CCSC helps combat the effects of poverty and joblessness in Houston.
"It was fun!" George Pacey, 11, said. "I like knowing people will be getting the packages. The one hour we spent can make a difference, it can make happy families."
"It was really interesting," Emma Quintero, 8, said. "I didn't know what a hygiene kit was. Now that I know, I'd do this again. It feels good helping people." Emma's mother, Anneliese Bujanda, said they are starting a tradition of helping others. "I want to bring gratitude to our lives. This was a great way to do that."
"CCSC believes it is important to provide families the opportunity to serve together," Senior Director of Development Sara Pybus said. "We thank all the families who volunteered and made our 2025 Family Service Day both fun and meaningful. Special thanks also go to longtime CCSC supporter Emily Griffin, who sponsored the hygiene kit project."
